What is the traditional Japanese color "Usu-gaki"?
Usu-gaki is a slightly reddish yellow, and is an even paler persimmon color than Arai-gaki and Share-gaki. The dyeing method for this color is described in "Mansenmono Harimono Soden," written in the Genroku period, and introduces a method to dye it even lighter than Share-gaki. In addition, the Edo period book "Hanko-zome" states that Usu-gaki and Share-gaki were popular for dyeing katabira (a general term for clothing without lining) around the time of the An'ei and Tenmei eras.
Usugaki = thin persimmon
Usugaki refers to the pale color of persimmons in general, and is used for a wide range of colors, from the strong orange of shave-gaki to the pinkish color of mizu-gaki. "Usugaki" is pronounced "usugaki."
