What is the traditional Japanese color "Peony"?
The name of the beautiful purple-red peony color comes from the gorgeous peony flower, as the name suggests. It was formerly called "Botan" and was one of the colors used in layered garments for aristocrats from the Heian period onwards. The layered color combination of "front: white, back: red plum" was mainly used for women's clothing and was popular as a color that gave a gorgeous and noble impression.

Peony color was worn as a costume by young people in the upper samurai society especially in the late Muromachi period, and it was customary for women to wear this color until the age of 20, and for boys until the age of 14 to 15. "Peony" is pronounced "botan".
