What is the traditional Japanese color "beni-ume-iro"?
Beni-bai is a pale red with a slight purple tint, named after the color of the Beni-bai flowers that bloom in early spring. It is a type of safflower dye, and depending on the intensity of the dye, it is called "dark beni-bai," "medium beni-bai," or "light beni-bai." When people generally talk about Beni-bai, they are often referring to "medium beni-bai," and this color is especially known for appearing in literature and poetry. Beni-bai is also famous as one of the colors used in kasane, a traditional Japanese costume. By using Beni-bai color for the outer fabric and Safflower color for the lining, a technique has been used to delicately express the light and shade of red.
