Learn about Japan's traditional colors

2025.3.18

Can you read it? The traditional Japanese color "Sohoko" is not pronounced "sohoko".

What is the traditional Japanese color "Sofoko"?

Sappanha is a crimson-brown colour that resembles the red of sappan mixed with yellow. The character "ka" (fragrance) comes from the fact that it was originally dyed using fragrant cloves and sappan. However, cloves were very expensive, so gardenia and safflower were used as substitutes, and then sappanha came to be used instead of safflower. This is called "kosen" and is classified according to the intensity of the colour into "dark ko (ko)", "medium ko (kosen-zome/clove-zome)" and "light ko (ko-iro)".

Sapphire Fragrance = Suokou

It was also used as a color for kimono fabrics in the Heian period, and is characterized by its gorgeous combination of "safflower on the front and yellow on the back." "Safflower" is pronounced "suokou."
