What is the traditional Japanese color "Suzumeiro"?
As the name suggests, sparrow color is a traditional color that refers to the deep reddish brown of a sparrow's head. It is also called "Suzumegashirairo" (sparrow head color) and is a color name that has been seen since the Edo period. The expression "Suzumeiro-ji" appears in "Tokaidochu Hizakurige" by Jippensha Ikku, and is said to have been used to describe the time of dusk. At that time, people called the sky at dusk "Suzumeiro-ji" in reference to the color of a sparrow's head, and sensed the changes in nature.
Sparrow color = Suzumeiro
There is a color called "Suzume-cha" that is similar to the color of sparrows, but it is sometimes considered to be a slightly grayish brown like a sparrow's feathers, so there is often no strict distinction between the two. "Suzume-iro" is pronounced "suzume-iro".
