What is the traditional Japanese color "Tsubamejiro"?
A deep crimson with a blackish hue, tallow crimson is a traditional color that has been around for a long time. This color comes from "true crimson," a dye made from plant-based safflower, and "raw crimson," an animal-based color that contains a red pigment extracted from a small insect called lac scale. It is particularly associated with the ancient Chinese dynasty of Yan, and is thought to have been named after the red fat of the country. This deep crimson color gives an impression of nobility, and has historically been treasured as a color symbolizing feminine beauty.
Brown = dark red
The mid-Heian period document "Wamyo Ruijusho" also states that it was popular as a blusher or lipstick used as a cosmetic by women at the time. "Enjiiro" is pronounced "enji-iro".
