Learn about Japan's traditional colors

2025.4.8

Can you read it? The traditional Japanese color "light pink" is not pronounced "hakubeni"

What is the traditional Japanese color "light pink"?

Usu-kurenai, also known as "usukurenai," is a safflower dyed color that is even paler than chu-kurenai and a little paler than beni-ume-iro. In dyeing, the intensity of the turmeric used in the base is kept constant, and the intensity of the safflower is adjusted to create the difference from chu-kurenai. This results in an overall warm, yellowish hue. Usu-kurenai has been widely used since ancient times to describe colors with a reddish tinge, but the degree of paleness has changed over the ages, and it expresses a wide range of gradations, from pale colors close to peach to strong red colors.

Pale pink = Usubeni

Usubeni is also used as a color name to symbolize beautiful things in nature, such as "Usubeni" (light pink plum) and "Usubeni" (light pink flowers), and is a color that is particularly closely associated with the scenery of spring.
