What is the traditional Japanese color "Choshu-iro"?
It is a grayish reddish purple color that gives a calm and soothing impression. The name of this color means "Eternal Spring" and comes from Choshunka, another name for the Chinese rose Koshinbara. It was also popular in the early Taisho period because of its similarity to "Old Rose," a color that represents the color of faded roses that was popular in Europe in the late 19th century. Due to its calmness and elegance, it was often used for women's clothing and accessories.
Chou Shun Iro (color of long spring)
The rose itself was imported from China and was called "sou-bi" during the Heian period and was popular among aristocrats as an ornamental plant. "Chou-shun-iro" is pronounced "cho-shun-iro."
