What is the traditional Japanese color "Chu-ku"?
This refers to the standard red color dyed with safflower. It is also called "nakamomi" or "chumomi" because it is derived from the dyeing method of extracting pigment from safflower. Because safflower dye fades easily, the technique of first dyeing with a yellow dye such as turmeric or maple leaves was used. Red dye has different names depending on the shade of the color, with pale colors called ikkonzome, peach color, and light red, intermediate colors called chu-ku-ren, and dark colors called ankoushoku.
Medium red
Safflower is widely used not only as a dye, but also in cosmetics such as lipstick and as a herbal medicine, and is deeply rooted in Japanese traditional culture.
