What is the traditional Japanese color "Sohi"?
A bright reddish-orange color dyed with madder and lye, Subi is a traditional color referring to a pale shade of scarlet. In ancient times, it had less restrictive social status restrictions than scarlet and was a color that could be worn by people of the fifth rank or higher. The shade of the color changes depending on the number of times it is dyed, and in China, one-time dyeing was called "gen," two-time dyeing was called "tei," three-time dyeing was called "kun," and four-time dyeing was called "shu." According to the annotations in the "Ryo Gijie," Subi is described as a pale red color dyed three times with madder.
