Learn about Japan's traditional colors

2025.8.5

Can you read it? The traditional Japanese color "Koheki" is not pronounced "Koheki"

What is the traditional Japanese color "Beniheki"?

Beni-aoki is characterized by a pale blue-purple color with a slight reddish tint. "Ao" is originally a word used to describe jasper, but here it refers to the sky blue. By layering safflower on top of a sky blue base dyed with indigo, the slightly reddish hue is achieved. Dyeings that combine indigo and safflower include "Niai" and "Beni-kakebana-iro," both of which have a soft impression similar to wisteria. The delicate color tones achieved by layering red and indigo dyes are thought to have given people at the time an impression of elegant and refined beauty.

Red and green

From the mid to late Edo period, a color combination of indigo and safflower was popular and was often used for clothing.
