What is the traditional Japanese color "Benikakebanairo"?

Another name for "Beni-Ao," Benikakehana-iro is a pale bluish purple with a slight reddish tint. In "Tekagami Moyo Setsuyo," it is described as "Ko, Usu Futaai" and belongs to the "Futaai" family. Other colors with Benikake in their name include "Benikake Sorairo" and "Benikake Nandou," both of which are sophisticated shades of blue-purple. Benikakehana-iro has an elegant hue similar to wisteria, and was beloved as a stylish color during the Edo period. The exquisite color created by combining safflower and indigo is said to have struck a chord with the sensibilities of people at the time and gained popularity.

The safflower used in the dye is a plant of the Asteraceae family and is a precious dye, so expensive that it was said that one momme of safflower was worth one momme of gold. "Benikakehanairo" is pronounced "beni kake hanairo."
