What is the traditional Japanese color "uguisu-cha"?
This yellow-green color has a brownish hue reminiscent of a Japanese bush warbler's back. It has been commonly used since the Edo period, and is still popular today as one of the few Japanese yellow-green color names, along with miruiro (sea pine color). "Uguisu tea" is also mentioned in Chikamatsu Monzaemon's Joruri play "Yamazaki Yojibei's New Year's Pine Tree," proving that it was widely known even back then. The color tone of the dye has undergone changes, with a deep hue in the early Edo period, but changing to a relatively pale yellow-green from the middle to late period. Characterized by a subdued, subdued hue, it is a color that evokes traditional Japanese aesthetics.
Uguisucha = Nightingale Tea
Not only does it appear in Ukiyo-zoshi and Joruri, but it was also used as the color of the kimonos in portraits of beautiful women and actors.
