What is the traditional Japanese color "light blue"?
Light blue is the traditional color name for the color of clear water. It was created by dyeing light blue with a slight paleness and a touch of indigo added. It was originally called "Mizuhanada" in the "Manyoshu," and colors of this family are mentioned in poems. During the Edo period, it was widely popular as a color for summer kimonos, along with sky blue and light blue. It was especially popular as a base color for katabira (single-layered summer kimonos), and Ihara Saikaku's "Koshoku Ichidai Otoko" (A Man Who Loves Love) states, "On a light blue silk katabira, faint diamond patterns should be sewn into the thread."
Light blue = Mizuiro
The color name "mizuiro" is unique to Japan, and overseas it is often treated as a color similar to "sky blue" or "light blue." "Mizuiro" is pronounced "mizu-iro."
