What is the traditional Japanese color "purple"?
Purple is a deep purple color dyed using safflower root and camellia lye as a mordant. It has been used since ancient times alongside crimson and indigo, and has been particularly revered as a color symbolizing nobility and authority. In the "Thirteen Ranks of Crowns and Ranks System" established in 647, deep purple was used as the color of the clothing worn by the highest rank, the weaved crown, showing that purple was a color that indicated high status. It was also used as the color of costumes according to the rank and duties of nobles, playing an important role in expressing formality.
Purple = Murasaki
Purple robes also have a special meaning in the Buddhist world, and the wearing of purple robes, which indicate the highest rank of monks, required permission from the Emperor. "Murasaki" is pronounced "murasaki."
