It is said that there are only two surnames consisting of five kanji characters in existence in Japan: "Zaemon Saburo" and "Kaneyuki Koji," which originated from a descendant of a noble family.
"Zaemon" refers to the "Zaemonfu," one of the government offices during the Heian period. The two "Emonfu" offices on either side were responsible for guarding the gates of the Daidairi Palace and accompanying the Emperor on his travels.
It is said that "Saemon Saburo" was the surname given to the third son of a samurai family who worked at the Saemon office, and was given to his descendants after returning home to commemorate his achievements.
