What is the traditional Japanese color "Mamegara Tea"?
Mamegara tea is a pale grey with a greenish tinge, reminiscent of willow leaves. The name of the color comes from the calm color that results when bean stalks and leaves (bean husks) are dried, and in "Tekagami Moyo Setsuyo" it is described as "willow mouse, commonly known as mamegara tea." The Edo period humorous book "Yoshiwara Yoji Yoji" (1788) also states, "She went out wearing a willow mouse pajama kosode with a willow tea bowl obi," indicating that it was a popular style of clothing at the time.
Bean husk tea = mamegaracha
It is also called willow mouse, and it is thought that the reason one color is called both "brown" and "mouse" is because the color tone was a low-saturation color. "Mamegara tea" is pronounced "mamegaracha."
