"Chiaki" is known as a surname unique to Gunma Prefecture.



It is estimated that there are around 2000 to 3000 people with this condition in Japan, but more than half of them are concentrated in Gunma Prefecture, especially in Numata City, Shibukawa City, and Katashina Village in Tone County.



There are variations in the spelling, such as "Chigira," "Chikira," and "Chiki," all of which are pronounced "Chigira."



Its origins are said to be from Chigira in Tsukui County, Sagami Province, but in Gunma Prefecture, there are also legends of families descended from the Fujiwara clan and Heike refugees. Even today, Gunma Prefecture is home to Chiaki Ranch and the long-established inn, Chiaki Jinsentei, and the family name has been passed down as a family name deeply rooted in the region.
