What is the traditional Japanese color "silver soot bamboo"?
A traditional color called Ginsutake (silver soot bamboo) is a whitish yellowish-brown that is a slightly lighter version of soot bamboo. The "silver" in this color name means whitish, and the "gold" means yellowish, with Ginsutake having a color tone somewhere in between. The "Somemono Juhoki" states that "Kinsutake means yellow to brown," describing it as a yellowish brown. The "Somemono Hiden" (dyeing secrets) from 1797 describes a dyeing method using plum peels, kariyasu, lime water, and other materials.

This color is also known as "Kishu tea" because it was favored by the lord of the Kishu domain, and in the world of tea ceremony it is said to be the favorite color of Sen no Sosa, the founder of the Omotesenke school of tea. "Silver soot bamboo" is pronounced "ginsusutake."
