What is the traditional Japanese color "amber"?
Amber refers to a translucent yellow-orange color with a yellowish tint. The name comes from the fact that amber is a resin that was buried underground in geological times and turned into stone over a long period of time. In the past, it was called "kuhaku" or "akadama" (red ball), and was valued as an ornament, jewelry, and fragrance. Nowadays, the word is also used to describe the color of liquids such as whiskey.
Amber = Kohakuiro
It is a color that has also appeared in literary works. In Natsume Soseki's "Kusa Makura," it is described as "an amber-colored liquid with a hint of green," and writers such as Akutagawa Ryunosuke and Hori Tatsuo also described its color as "amber-colored liquid." "Amber" is pronounced "kohakuiro."
