Supervised by Premium Japan Editorial Department

Hachimantai is known for Towada-Hachimantai National Park.

Hachimantai, which stretches across the border between Iwate and Akita prefectures, is a place where you can feel the scale of a plateau, with a series of gently sloping volcanoes. The marshes and swamps created by the unique topography of a volcanic belt, and the land with its fumaroles, give off a mystical atmosphere, and at the same time, it has also nurtured many hot springs.

It is now part of Towada-Hachimantai National Park and is known for its natural beauty throughout the seasons, including its vast marshes and Kagami-numa, which takes on a mysterious appearance during the snowmelt season. In 2005, the former towns of Andai, Nishine, and Matsuo merged to form Hachimantai City, named after the plateau.

Hachimantai is "Hachimantai"The name of this place is said to have originated from the legend of Sakanoue no Tamuramaro, who went to conquer the Emishi during the Enryaku era of the Nara period. After defeating the bandits hiding around Mt. Iwate, he prayed for lasting military fortune, enshrined the deity Ojin Hachiman, and praised the magnificent scenery that unfolded before his eyes, which is why it came to be called "Hachimantai."
