[Difficult to read place names] How do you read them? Tome City in Miyagi Prefecture is not read as "Noborigomeshi"

Supervised by Premium Japan Editorial Department

Tome City in Miyagi Prefecture was created as a result of the great merger that took place during the Heisei era.

The place name Tome reflects the role that this land has played. Rice cultivation has been thriving in this area since the days of the Date Domain, and large quantities of rice were sent to Edo (present-day Tokyo) via water transport on the Kitakami River. It is said that the name "Tome" came from the way the rice that supported Edo's food supply "climbed" toward the capital.

The city is bordered by the Izunuma and Uchinuma marshes, both registered as Ramsar wetlands, the Hasama River running through the center, and the majestic Kitakami River running to the east. These abundant water resources have nurtured the fertile Tome farmland, creating the rice-growing landscape that continues to this day.

Tome City

Tome City means "Tomeshi"The city's name is "Tome," but the town it was part of before the merger, "Tome-cho," is pronounced "Toyoma," so it can be easy to get confused.
