What is the traditional Japanese color "Nijiiro"?
The achromatic, dull color used for mourning attire is called dull color, and is also pronounced "nibuiro." Men wore naoshi, kariginu, nunori, under-gown, and sashinuki, while women wore uchigi (undergarments) dyed dull colors. When the emperor mourned a relative within the second degree of kinship, he is said to have worn a robe called "shakujo," which is in the same color family. The dye is said to have been made using the blue juice extracted from the dayflower and ink, and the subdued color expressed deep condolences.
dull color = nibiiro
The word "nibi" means "dull" or "not reflecting light." From there, it came to be used to refer to subdued, subdued colors. "Nibiiro" is pronounced "nibi-iro."
