Namegata City, which spreads out as if embraced by two large lakes, Lake Kasumigaura and Lake Kitaura, is an area with a unique topography and name even within Ibaraki Prefecture.
Namegata is a land with a long history, and its name is even mentioned in the Hitachi Fudoki. For a long time it existed as Namegata County, and in the Heisei era, the towns of Aso, Kitaura, and Tamatsukuri merged to form the current city of Namegata.
The city is also focusing on urban development that makes use of sports, and is particularly known for hosting soccer training camps. Along with the neighboring cities of Kashima, Itako, Hokota, and Moka, it is also the home town of the J.League's Kashima Antlers. Activities aimed at revitalizing the region are being carried out.
Namegatashi (Namegata City)
Namegata City is "Namegatashi"It is known as a place name that is difficult to decipher at first sight.
Behind this name lies an ancient story. It is said that when Yamato Takeru no Mikoto, a character in Japanese mythology, visited this area, he saw the landscape of waterside and plateaus intertwined in multiple layers and described it as "namekuwashi" (narrow and delicate). This word, which described the delicate and intricate landscape of the land, eventually became established as the name "Namegata."
