The place name Juyoni in Kashiwa City, Chiba Prefecture, is derived from a large-scale land reclamation project that took place in the early Meiji period.
During the Edo period, the area around present-day Kashiwa was a horse pasture called Koganemaki, directly controlled by the Tokugawa Shogunate. After the Meiji Restoration, the new government began cultivating this wilderness to provide employment and livelihood support for former shogunate retainers in Edo.
The land was then divided into sections and developed into settlements in order, with each section being assigned a number, and the 12th area developed was given the name Juyo-ni.
The names of the 13 settlements that emerged from the land reclamation, including "Juyoni," were all derived from numbers, such as Hatsutomi (number 1), Futawa (number 2), and Misaki (number 3). "Juyoni" means the 12th of these, and remains a place name that reflects the history of the region and the hardships of the settlers.
