What is the traditional Japanese color "Toki Asagi"?
Toki Asagi is a pale crimson with a slight grayish tint, even lighter than Choshun Iro. The name is thought to have come from the fact that it combines the crimson of Tokiiro (Toki-iro) with the soft hue of Asagi (Asagi). The Edo period dyeing manual "Tekagami Moyo Setsuyo" refers to it as "mizugaki, commonly known as tokiasagi," indicating that it is the same color as the crimson red known as mizugaki (water persimmon).
Toki Asagi = Toki Asagi
"Toki" refers to the crested ibis bird, which has crimson on the inside of its wings. It was once seen all over Japan, but due to overhunting and other factors it is on the verge of extinction, and conservation efforts are currently underway. "Toki Asagi" is pronounced "Toki Asagi."
