What is the traditional Japanese color "gardenia"?
Gardenia is a reddish-yellow dye made from gardenia fruit. Gardenia is an evergreen shrub in the Rubiaceae family that blooms with fragrant white flowers in early summer and eventually bears pale yellow fruit. These fruits have long been valued as a yellow dye, and the records in the Nuidono-ryo section of the Engishiki (Engishiki) record its dyeing uses as "deep gardenia twill," "yellow gardenia twill," and "shallow gardenia twill." Deep colors are achieved by using gardenia as a base dye and layering on safflower, then finishing with a vinegar mordant, while strong yellows are dyed using only gardenia decoction.

Gardenia is also called "Iwanuiro" (the color of silence) because it is similar to the Japanese word for "mouthless." Gardenia is pronounced "kuchinashi."
