What is the traditional Japanese color "Akatsukiba"?




A deep reddish brown color with a reddish tinge is called Aka-Kutsuteba. During the Heian period, Aka-Kutsuteba was widely used as a clothing color, and there were so many shades that they were called "48 colors of Kutsuteba." Aka-Kutsuteba is particularly used as a layered color for woven fabrics and as a color scheme for textiles. Aka-Kutsuteba, along with yellow-Kutsuteba, blue-Kutsuteba, dark-Kutsuteba, and light-Kutsuteba, were used according to the season and costume.

The color of decayed leaves symbolizes the end of autumn, and among them, red decayed leaves are said to have been loved as a color that evokes the scene of late autumn when the leaves are falling. "Akakuchiba" is pronounced "akakuchiba."
