Learn about Japan's traditional colors

2026.3.26

Can you read this? The traditional Japanese color "Shinbashi-iro" is not pronounced "Shinkyo".

What is the traditional Japanese color "Shinbashi-iro"?

Shinbashi-iro is a vibrant, greenish-blue color. Today, it's the same color as turquoise blue. This bright blue-green, created in the mid-Meiji era using imported chemical dyes, was very fresh for its time and became popular as a stylish color that gave an urban impression. Geishas in Shinbashi, Tokyo, favored this color and incorporated it into their clothing, hence it came to be called "Shinbashi-iro." This color remained fashionable until the Taisho era and was also used in the beautiful women paintings of Japanese painters such as Kagami Kiyokata and Uemura Shoen.
