What is the traditional Japanese color "Toki-kacha"?
A muted, pale yellowish-red color is called Toki-Karacha. According to the Edo period dyeing manual "Tekagami Moyo Setsuyo," "Toki" is thought to refer to a warm, pale pink like the feathers of an ibis, and "Karacha" is thought to refer to a light, grayish brown. It is rarely seen in documents other than "Tekagami Moyo Setsuyo," so it is unclear to what extent it was used, but in the Edo period, when a wide variety of brown shades were created, to the point of being called "forty-eight shades of brown and one hundred shades of gray," it was considered one of those shades.
Tokigaracha
"Tōcha" is a stylish name that evokes images of imported tea leaves and Chinese pottery, and was popular as a color name with an elegant sound. "Tokigaracha" is pronounced "tokigaracha".
