Learn about Japan's traditional colors

2026.4.3

Can you read this? The traditional Japanese color "葡萄茶" is not pronounced "budōcha".

What is the traditional Japanese color "grape tea"?

Grape brown is a traditional color that is a slightly brownish version of the reddish-purple color seen when wild grapes ripen. From the mid to late Meiji period, it was widely used for the hakama (traditional Japanese trousers) worn by female students and teachers. At the time, because of their elegant appearance, they were sometimes likened to Murasaki Shikibu, a female scholar from the Heian period, and called "grape brown Shikibu." This color family has also changed names over time; in the Taisho period, maroon became popular, and in the Showa period, it became fashionable as wine red.

Grape tea = Ebicha

Because the character for "grape" (葡萄) can be read as "shrimp" (えび), it was confused with the crustacean shrimp, and "epicha" is now written as "海老茶" (ebi-cha). "葡萄茶" is read as "ebi-cha".
