Learn about Japan's traditional colors

2026.4.23

Can you read this? The traditional Japanese color "桃紅色" is not pronounced "momobeni-iro".

What is the traditional Japanese color "peach pink"?

Peach blossom pink is a deep reddish hue reminiscent of peach blossoms. It has a stronger reddish tint than regular peach, making it a more vibrant color that goes beyond soft pink. While a beautiful peach blossom color has a delicate feel, adding a touch of red changes the atmosphere, bringing the color itself to the forefront. Its distinct, strong hue conveys a sense of strong will on the part of the wearer. The demure impression of peach blossom pink transforms into a lively and vibrant expression in peach blossom pink.

Peach-pink = toukoushoku

Peaches are cherished as flowers that herald spring, and have long been believed to have the power to ward off evil spirits. The custom of decorating with peach blossoms during the Hina Matsuri (Girls' Festival) is a remnant of this belief. "桃紅色" is pronounced "tōkōshoku".
