What is the traditional Japanese color "Unohana-iro"?
The color of the deutzia flower, known as "unohana-iro," is a faintly yellowish-white color derived from the color of the deutzia flower that blooms in early summer. The deutzia flower is also known as another name for the tree that produces small white flowers in early summer. Its whiteness is striking, and in the Heian period it was described as "mistakable as snow." The great haiku poet Matsuo Basho also wrote that when he visited Shirakawa Barrier, he saw deutzia flowers in full bloom and remarked that the area looked as if it were covered in snow.

The character "卯" (U) has meanings such as "first" and "birth," and the color of the deutzia flower has been seen as an auspicious white that evokes a sense of beginnings and possibilities. "卯花色" is pronounced "unohana-iro."
