2026.5.15

Can you read this? The traditional Japanese color "rose color" is not pronounced "shōbi-iro".

What is the traditional Japanese color "rose color"?

The color "rose-colored" (薔薇色) is named after the hue of a red rose. While the rose is an ancient flower mentioned in works like the "Kokin Wakashu" and "Makura no Soshi," its use as a color name only began in the Meiji era. In English, it's called "rose red," referring to a distinct and vivid red. As the expression "a rosy life" suggests, it's a color that evokes feelings of happiness, joy, and hope.

Rose-colored = barairo

Roses are flowers that were introduced to Japan from China, and were formerly called "sōbi" or "shōbi." "Rose color" is pronounced "barairo."
