What is the traditional Japanese color "Kani-Tori-zome" (crab and bird dye)?
The pale blue color, reminiscent of a cool breeze by the water, is a traditional color called "Kani-tori-zome" (crab and bird dye). Originally, "Kani-tori" referred to the "ubugi" (first garment) worn by a baby born into a high-ranking family. This name was used for garments made of lustrous neriginu (a type of silk fabric) dyed in pale blue, decorated with small patterns of crabs, cranes, and auspicious symbols, and was considered very auspicious.

Baby clothes were often worn on the seventh day after birth, during the "Oshichiya" ceremony, and were important garments that incorporated the family's status and wishes into their colors and patterns. "Kanitorizome" is pronounced "kanitorizome".
