What is the traditional Japanese color "Sōshi-nezumi" (相思鼠)?
The soft gray color "Sōshi-nezumi" (相思鼠) is derived from the feather color of the sorrowful bird. This small bird, about the size of a sparrow, has a beautiful gray color with a hint of purple spreading across its back. As its name suggests, it is known for its deep bond with its mate, and for calling out to each other if separated. Originally inhabiting China and other regions, it has become found in Japan since the normalization of diplomatic relations between Japan and China in 1972. Therefore, although its history as a color name is relatively recent, its memorable sound and elegant hue have attracted many people.

The Japanese pygmy seabird (Sōshinezu) is currently found in the wild throughout Japan and is considered an invasive species whose songs can be heard in mountainous areas and forests.
