What is the traditional Japanese color "Ten-sei"?
The traditional color called "Tensei" (天青) is a bright, clear blue reminiscent of a clear sky. However, it's not just a pure blue; it's characterized by a subtle, soft cloudiness. It's said to be dyed with indigo and sappanwood, and this slight cloudiness creates a color with depth. This color is widely known for the celadon ware of the Ru ware kilns, a famous kiln from the Northern Song dynasty in China. Its color, praised as "Uka Tensei" (雨過天青), has been considered particularly beautiful even among celadon ware.
Tensei = Tensei
Ru ware celadon is extremely rare, with only a few dozen pieces known to exist worldwide. "天青" is pronounced "tensei."
