What is the traditional Japanese color "pearl color"?
The color pearly white is a faintly grayish milky white, derived from the soft luster of pearls. Pearls, nurtured over a long period of time by the nacre secreted within the oyster, change their appearance in various ways depending on how the light hits them. This color captures that delicate luster and shine. Because of its elegant and refined impression, it is often used in literary works, and has been described as "pearl-colored eyes" or "pearl-colored roses." None of these are accurate descriptions of the actual color, but by choosing these words, the nobility and mystical beauty of the pearl are more strongly conveyed.
Pearl color = shinju-iro
Pearls are known as the birthstone for June and have long been considered a symbol of purity and elegance, used in gifts and special occasions. "Pearl color" is pronounced "shinju-iro."
