What is "Konoe-gaki," a traditional Japanese color...?
Konoe-gaki is a soft orange color said to originate from the attire of the prestigious Konoe family. During the Edo period, people's names were sometimes used to describe colors, and this color is one such example. The Konoe family, descended from Fujiwara no Michinaga, was one of the Five Regent Houses, which held particularly high status among the court nobles, and their dignified image is reflected in the color name. It is said to be a color similar to kōrozen, which is used in imperial ceremonies, and it is thought that it was favored as a symbol of authority.
