Can you read this? The rare surname "山清水" is not pronounced "yamakiyomizu".

The Yamashimizu surname is rare and is mainly found in Kurohone-cho, Kiryu City, Gunma Prefecture. It is said to have originated from a family with roots in Echigo Province (present-day Niigata Prefecture), and their original surname was "Shimizu." An interesting history remains, suggesting that they later moved to Gunma Prefecture, where their surname changed.

According to legend, the turning point came when the family ventured deep into the mountains and discovered a spring of excellent quality water. The local lord, who highly valued this pure water, ordered them to add the character for "mountain" to their surname, "Shimizu," and call themselves "Yama-Shimizu." This anecdote, in which the blessings of nature are entrusted to the surname, is one of the rare origins among Japanese surnames.

Another reason this surname is rare is its limited distribution. While "Shimizu" is one of the most common surnames in Japan, "Yamashimizu" is found only in limited areas nationwide. Therefore, despite sharing the same roots as "Shimizu," it is known as a surname that has followed its own unique history.

Even today, many families with ties to the Kurohone-cho area of Kiryu City, Gunma Prefecture, have inherited the family name along with the history of the region. The surname "Yamashimizu," which is a direct reflection of the blessings of nature—mountains and water—can be said to embody the profound depth of Japan's unique surname culture.
