The Relight of the Okura Lanterns and Ranka Lamps at The Okura Tokyo

In September of 2019, “The Okura Tokyo” will be marking a new start, while inheriting their  traditions and true essences. The new hotel consists of two buildings, The Okura Heritage Wing and The Okura Prestige Tower.

The memory of a place such as Okura, is created by the integration of various elements. After their opening in 1962, the landmark lobby’s welcoming feelings of warmth and calmness have been engraved as the “Japanese Space” in the people’s hearts. The beloved lobby designed by the architect Yoshiro Taniguchi, has been fully researched and recorded in order to reprise his design at the new lobby of Okura Prestige Tower.

The Okura lantern is constituted by five diamond hexahedrons, each made with a  combination of ten pentagon sides. This distinctive lantern originates from a Kirikodamagata (Hexahedral Pattern) necklace bead from the Kofun Period (300-538). The ancient bead was a crystal, decorated with cuts on multiple sides.

The lantern’s rhythmic pattern of diagonal lines enriches the open space of the lobby. This diagonal rhythmic pattern is deeply connected to the traditional Japanese designs. While the horizontal line expresses fixedness, the diagonal line expresses the soothing sways inspired by nature.

The decoration of the Okura Heritage Wing will inherit the Ranka (Orchid) Lamps from the former hotel’s Orchid Bar. These beautiful lamps represent the elegance of Orchid flowers. The lamps were designed and handblown by the glass craftsman, Toshichi Iwata.
The tranquil flowing time and fascinating space of Okura will be carried on to the coming new age along with their extraordinary lightings.

The Okura Lanterns will be placed on the 5th Floor Lobby of Okura Prestige Tower and the Ranka Lamps will be placed on the 5th Floor Lobby of Okura Heritage Wing.
