Hayama Kajitei, a registered tangible cultural property located on a small hill in Hayama, has been turned into a lodging facility.

The Kaji residence is a valuable building designed by Arata Endo, a disciple of Frank Lloyd Wright, known as one of the three great masters of modern architecture. Speaking of Frank Lloyd Wright, it is well known that he designed the Tokyo Imperial Hotel, which has now been relocated to Aichi Prefecture. Architect Arata Endo was involved in the construction of the Tokyo Imperial Hotel. After that, he was the person who virtually supported Wright from design to completion in all of the buildings he was involved in designing in Japan, such as ``Jiyu Gakuen Tomorrow Building'' and ``Old Yamamura Family Residence (currently Yodogawa Steel Works Guest House)''. be.

``Hayama Kaji Residence'' is the villa of Toshio Kaji, who served as Mitsui & Co.'s London bureau chief, and was built in 1928. Later, the Kaji Main Residence, designed by Shin Endo, was built in Shirokane Sankocho, Tokyo, but it has now been demolished.

The Kaji residence is known for its prairie style architecture that blends with nature. The pillars of the house are made of Oya stone, which is reminiscent of the Tokyo Imperial Hotel, and the design is such that the inside and outside are gently connected. The furniture in the building was also designed by Arata Endo, and windows are installed so that no matter where you stand in the room, the space looks beautiful and expansive, and you can always feel the view of the lush garden.

Inside, you can feel the attention to detail and the masterful work of the craftsmen. You can see that a huge amount of time and money went into this construction, and the wonderful architecture is definitely worth seeing.

The Kaji residence has been used as a vacation home by the Kaji family for about 90 years, and has remained largely unrenovated, keeping Arata Endo's architectural philosophy intact. However, on the other hand, there was also a pressing need for roof repairs, water supply installations, and waterproofing of the structure. Therefore, the current owner of the Kaji residence says that while preserving its historical heritage, it has been repaired and restored to improve safety and comfort.

A new spa was created in the basement, which had been used as a servant's room, and a space with a tranquil atmosphere was added. Restoration is not as easy as building a new building, and it costs more. However, this decision was made because of the owner's strong desire to preserve the building as much as possible. And thanks to that, we can feel that beautiful space.
