Mt. Fuji has been a guidepost for travel since ancient times.
Captivated by the encounter on the ship
The most beautiful view of Mt. Fuji from the sea is Mt.
This is an opinion that every sailor will agree with. Long before lighthouses were built, high mountains served as guideposts for crossing the sea.
The presence of land can be felt even from a distance. Above all, its magnificent appearance conveys the symbolic nobility of the earth rising between the sky and the sea.
From a ship sailing in Tokyo Bay off the coast of Yokohama. Mt. Fuji covered in snow is also beautiful.
When you think of Mt. Fuji from the sea, Suruga Bay is the first place that comes to mind.
The Suruga Bay Ferry runs daily from Shimizu Port, the gateway to the sea, making it easy to enjoy Mt. Fuji cruising whenever you feel like it. It may come as a surprise, but you can also see Mt. Fuji from Yokohama Bay and Kashima-nada, so there are plenty of opportunities to see Mt. Fuji from ferries departing from the Tokyo metropolitan area. However, they are often hidden behind tall buildings, so we recommend choosing a ship that is as tall as possible. It's even better if it's sunny in winter.
There are mountains named Fuji all over Japan.
Thinking about my hometown Fuji
You can clearly see how much Mt. Fuji was loved by visiting local ports.
There are over 300 mountains named Fuji across Japan, and many of them can be seen from the coastline, giving them a completely different appearance than when seen from land. Rishiri Fuji, which is famous as a local Fuji, is one of them. You can see the entire view from the Heartland Ferry, which connects Rebun Island and Rishiri Island.
Mount Rishiri (Mount Rishiri) on Rishiri Island in Hokkaido is also called Rishiri Fuji.
Because it is an independent peak surrounded by the sea, it is often covered in clouds.
An unforgettable scene at dawn at Rishirifuji.
It's been almost 10 years since I saw Rishiri Fuji for the first time. At that time, the summit was covered in clouds and I couldn't see the whole thing, but it still left a big impact on me.
That's because the entire island was made up of beautiful mountains. It's like a mountain rising above the sea. I remember thinking that very well. After visiting five or six times, Rishirifuji finally showed itself in its entirety. The sight of the mountain surrounded by the morning glow, with a half moon hanging above its head, not only had the strength typical of mountains, but also had a delicate beauty that could be described as feminine.
Meanwhile, further south, Mt. Kaimondake in Kagoshima Prefecture has an unforgettable beauty as a local Mt. Fuji that can be seen from the sea. Rishirifuji has a dignified appearance towering over the sea, comparable to Rishirifuji. The one difference is that Mt. Kaimondake is not an island, but is connected to Ibusuki city by land. However, when I hear its other name, Satsuma Fuji, for some reason I get the impression that it is the pride of Kagoshima Prefecture.
Kaimondake, located in Ibusuki City, Kagoshima Prefecture, is called Satsuma Fuji because of its conical shape.
Satsuma Fuji is located at the narrowing part of the sea route to Kagoshima Port, at the entrance to the strait. Therefore, when you see the shadow of Satsuma Fuji from a distance, you know that Kagoshima Port is approaching soon.
Sakurajima, which carries Kinko Bay on its back, is also waiting in the distance, and the route through Kagoshima Port can be said to be the perfect route to view the two famous mountains from the sea. Perhaps because of this, there are many boats in sight, and many ferries arrive and depart from Naha, Amami Oshima, Yakushima, Iriomote Island, Kikaijima on this route that connects Kagoshima Port.
Kofuji on Hahajima is the southernmost local Fuji in Japan. View of Minamisaki from the top of Kofuji.
Hahajima, an island in the Ogasawara Islands located approximately 1000 kilometers south of Kagoshima, is home to Japan's southernmost hometown of Fuji. The rounded mountain called Kofuji is located in Minamisaki, the southernmost tip of Hahajima.
I have seen many other local Fujis, such as Hachijo Fuji, Shodoshima Fuji, and Yonaguni Fuji, but this time I would like to introduce three local Fujis that I feel are the most beautiful among them. I received it. It will be a great destination for your trip to experience not only Mt. Fuji, but also the beauty of the local area from a boat. It may give us an irreplaceable experience that will serve as a guidepost for the rest of our lives, more than just an ancient guidepost.
Lists the places introduced in Part 1 and Part 2 of ``Japanese Landscapes Seen from the Sea.''
