The power of art will once again transform the island into a vibrant and beautiful place.
To the Setouchi Triennale, which is held once every three years

2019 is the year when the Setouchi Triennale is held once every three years. The period is divided into three periods: spring, summer, and autumn. It is held from July 7th to August 19th in the summer, and from September 8th to November 25th in the fall.

Set on 12 islands and two ports (Takamatsu Port and Uno Port) in the Seto Inland Sea, numerous artworks by artists from around the world are exhibited indoors and outdoors. The idea is to move around and enjoy the area as you please. Since it covers a wide area, there are many ways to enjoy it, such as choosing what you want to see and visiting a specific island, visiting each island in several parts, or staying for a long time and seeing everything.

The works range in expression and form, from large structures and sculptures to buildings that function as public toilets, old folk houses where you can stay, restaurant lunches, dance and performances, drum performances, and tours that include movie viewing and dinner. The exhibits range from permanent exhibitions to various events held on specific days and times.

During the festival, many art lovers and fans of the Setouchi Triennale visit from Japan and abroad. Since its first run in 2010, it has grown in popularity with each successive event, and has developed dynamically as a place for visitors to meet the culture and people of Setouchi. Inspired by the Seto Inland Sea, Fram Kitagawa's desire and practice to ``give hope to Japan through art'' is making steady progress through works that could only be created in this area.

The theme is “Sea Restoration”
Artist’s sensibility + Seto Inland Sea = Joy of encountering a unique group of works

The process of creating a work begins with each artist learning about the characteristics of each island and port, as well as the local life, culture, and history. The artist selects a location and begins production after meeting with the residents. Some of the works were created for the first, second, or third time and are still on display, allowing us to feel the changes that have occurred over time and the joy of reuniting with them.

The Seto Inland Sea is calm and beautiful and gently soothes everyone's heart. However, with the wave of modernization, this area also began to suffer from problems such as natural destruction, population decline, and decline in fishing. That is why the theme of the art festival is "restoration of the sea."

The calm Seto Inland Sea with floating islands. A relaxing landscape spreads out. The calm Seto Inland Sea with floating islands. A relaxing landscape spreads out.

I deeply sympathize with the underlying idea of this festival, which is to look straight at the stagnation that the Seto Inland Sea and Shodoshima have experienced, and to be close to the people of the area. The power of art to involve local people and attract artists and viewers from outside is definitely revitalizing the islands of the Seto Inland Sea. An increasing number of people are moving from cities to this area after visiting the art festival and becoming fascinated by the area.

When you come across a work that the artist has put a lot of effort into, your heart will be moved, and you will also be filled with the delicious local food and comfortable atmosphere. What she sees is the ocean, mountains, sunlight, and the starry sky. That trip left a deep impression on her as an unforgettable experience of these islands.

What do you like, what you find beautiful, what your problems are, and what inspires you? Art cultivates your inner self and becomes a guide for your journey through the heart.

“Reaching the Other Shore: Shang Yan’s Voyage Exhibition”
Xiang Yang (China)

Reaching the other shore - Shang Yan's voyage exhibition Reaching the other shore - Shang Yan's voyage exhibition

Immediately upon landing at Kusakabe Port, one of the ports connecting Takamatsu and Shodoshima, you will immediately encounter an outdoor work by Chinese artist Xiang Yang that combines an old fishing boat and furniture.

As a child in the late 1960s, the author had the experience of going on a small fishing boat with his mother to search for his father. For him, the ship is something that leads him to a peaceful shore. You will be overwhelmed by the beauty of the tower (lighthouse) that towers over the side of the ship and is made up of stacks of traditional Chinese furniture. A ship that takes people and creatures to new places. The fact that the work is located so close to the port makes it all the more moving.

“The secret of Hanasuwa Island”
Kana Kou (Japan)

This work is on display inside the Shodoshima Furusato Village museum located on the Mito Peninsula. A painting with the motif of Hanajuhajima, an uninhabited island off the coast of the peninsula, is drawn inside the 16-sided inverted cone. It can be viewed from the top by climbing a ladder, or from the central space below. The fantastic blue gradation is beautiful.

A huge dome-shaped piece that stands looking up at the Senmaida fields in the Nakayama area. Approximately 15 bamboo trees were used, and local people cooperated in felling the bamboo. We were able to go inside the XNUMXm high dome made of woven bamboo, and as the sunlight filtered through the trees, people were lying on the bamboo floor or reading books.

"Olive Regent"

A three-dimensional work with a regent hairstyle and an olive-shaped face placed in an olive grove. It is also an unmanned sales stall, and sometimes vegetables and fruits are placed in the hollow part of the face. There is also a regent's wig placed next to it, making it a unique piece of art that many people wear while taking pictures.
