Sail Above a World of Silver! One of Japan’s Longest Zip Lines Awaits at Tree Picnic Adventure Ikeda
Fly like a bird over this panoramic view
Founded to revitalize the shrinking mountain village of Ikeda in Fukui Prefecture, Tree Picnic Adventure Ikeda is a leisure facility that fully embraces its natural environment. This time of year, a range of winter-only activities help visitors enjoy the “world of silver” that the surrounding forests become when blanketed in snow.
Strung between mountain peaks, the mega zip line is a kilometer (0.6 miles) long
The most spectacular activity is surely the winter iteration of Tree Picnic Adventure Ikeda’s famous Mega Zip Line, which lets visitors fly through the forest 60 meters (200 feet) off the ground. At 480 meters one way and 510 meters coming back (about a third of a mile each way), this is one of Japan’s largest zip lines, and the only place you can experience this dynamic activity over a snowy mountain is in wintry Ikeda. It’s a rush unlike anything skiing or snowboarding have to offer.
Other activities include “Discovery Snowshoeing,” a forest adventure especially for families, and “Kids’ Snowshoeing,” for children aged around 5 to 9. Crunching across drifts of snow through the silent forests is an unforgettable experience.
Savor the bounty of the mountain at local game restaurant Suikomu (“Dream of the Drunken Tiger”)
Ikeda is also home to a range of other facilities, from open-air onsen hot springs to game restaurants. Families can hit the slopes and ski, try the climbing gym built in the renovated school gymnasium, or even stay in accommodation built in the school itself—all great ways to let kids burn off that energy they have even in the colder months!
