January tournament: Day 11 – Two unbeaten men collide, and the winner is…?
Oh, boy! That one really was amazing!
I of course refer to the match involving local favorite Kotoshogiku. It’s fantastic enough that he has made it through the eleventh day with his unbeaten record still intact. But today’s triumph over the great Yokozuna Hakuho had me in goosebumps!
He even dictated everything from start to finish in his trademark style – with that trusted left hand on the belt. With his favored “bouncing drive” technique, he was able to bully Hakuho to the ropes and shove him out without facing even a hint of resistance. With this significant win, Kotoshogiku has given his title hopes a tremendous boost.
It’s the first time since his promotion to Ozeki in 2011 that Kotoshogiku (center) has gone the first eleven days unbeaten. With his wedding ceremony scheduled for just after the tournament, a championship win would serve as the icing on his wedding cake!
As things stand, Kotoshogiku leads the pack with a perfect record, while Hakuho’s first defeat confines him to second place alongside fellow Yokozuna Harumafuji. Having beaten Yokozuna Kakuryu already, Kotoshogiku only need face two more big boys in the final four days: Harumafuji and fellow Ozeki Goeido. I’d like to say that we are about to see the first Japanese top-division champion in ten years, but Hakuho’s strength can never be written off and the slightest slip could yet cost Kotoshogiku greatly.
I must confess that I already plan to watch the last three days live, so I’d quite like to be kept in suspense right up until the final moments!
