Located in central Kagoshima, and commanding a view of Sakurajima across Kinko bay, Kirishima has a lot to offer. Blessed with luxurious hot springs, and high quality cuisine, there is plenty to see and do. In Japan it is well known for being where Sakamoto Ryoma and his wife Oryo visited for their honeymoon. Kirishima-Jingū, where the founding myth of Japan is enshrined
Since ancient times Kirishima-Jingū has protected the local people and Takachiho peak. It is said that the great goddess Amaterasu Omikami commanded Niniginomikoto to descend to earth at the peak of Takachiho, and gain the worship of the local people. Currently it is located at the foot of the Kirishima mountain range, but it was originally positioned in the crater of Ohachi volcano.
However, it was destroyed twice due to large eruptions, and then rebuilt where it now stands. Furumiyaato where the shrine used to stand, along with Amenosakahoko are two of Kyushu’s major “power spots”
Myoken Ishiharaso: A place for hot spring lovers
Kirishima is one of the top locations in Japan for mineral rich hot springs. The town has four major hot springs; Kirishima Jingu hot spring, Kirishima hot spring, Myoken Hot Spring and Hinatayama Hot Spring all in close proximity. Each have large and small springs. Myoken ishiharaso is popular with hot spring fans and travelers alike.
