Sumida Aquarium End the Winter with a Dreamy Blend of Jellyfish and Snow Cityscape

The Kaleidoscope Tunnel is a slope 50 meters (160 feet) long

Located in Tokyo Skytree Town at the foot of Tokyo Skytree, Sumida Aquarium is currently hosting the ideal exhibition for the final chills of winter: “Snow and Jellyfish.”

“Snow and Jellyfish” is a multimedia art exhibit staged inside the aquarium’s sloping, 50-meter (160-foot) “Kaleidoscope Tunnel.” Some 5,000 mirrors in the tunnel’s walls and ceiling reflect eight tanks’ worth of drifting jellyfish alongside projected winter scenes like cityscapes with softly falling snow, creating a dreamy world of floating shapes and colors

What’s more, “Snow and Jellyfish” is interactive. The projected images react to your movements as you walk down the tunnel, turning your footprints into tracks in the “snow” or ripples in the water.

Ripples spread from a footstep in the (projected) water’s surface

A new kind of exhibit targeting all the senses

But that’s not all. The exhibition space is also gently perfumed with scents evoking soft and yielding snow, and the background music is based on the slow pulsing of the jellyfish. It’s an experience for all the senses.

On Friday nights during the exhibition period, there are also special programs allowing visitors to closely observe and even feed a jellyfish in a bottle, or create their own coaster with the same scent as the Kaleidoscope Tunnel.

With spring just around the corner—and this exhibit in its final days—a visit to the world of Sumida Aquarium’s jellyfish is the perfect way to wrap up off the Tokyo winter.
